Baba Suishaba Natural Cedar Incense

Crafted in the heart of Japan’s mountainous forests, this natural incense is made entirely from cedar leaves and tabunoki sap—free from preservatives, colorants, synthetic fragrances, or chemical additives. It carries the spirit of traditional Buddhist incense, preserving its purity and simplicity.

Behind this artisanal process are Takeshi and Chieko Baba, who handcraft each batch using a centuries-old watermill (Suishaba) nestled in Oku-Yame, in the Kyushu Prefecture. They gather cedar leaves from the surrounding forest and grind them into a fine powder with large wooden pestles driven by the mill’s water-powered mechanism. The powder is then mixed with tabunoki sap and pressed into sticks using a perforated metal mold.

This time-honored method reflects a deep respect for nature, heritage, and craftsmanship.
